About this site

Established as a fortified city by Sultan Moulay Ismaïl in 1688, the old medina of Beni Mellal forms the city's listed historic core. Part of its original ramparts still stands, notably to the west facing the Place de la Marche Verte, despite damage recorded as early as the 19th century. Built over ancient cavities, it shelters a traditional urban fabric now fragile, whose preservation remains a challenge for the city.
