About this site
Located at the southeastern corner of the medina, the Bab Marrakech Bastion (or Borj) was built in the 19th century to watch over the city's southern entrance, at the monumental gate of the same name. It is part of Essaouira's complete defensive system, made up of five cannon-equipped bastions that testify to the strategic importance of this much-coveted trading post.
