Built in 1938 as the Cinéma Rif, this landmark Art Deco building on the Grand Socco fell into decline and nearly closed for good in the mid-2000s, before being taken over by a nonprofit founded by artist Yto Barrada. Now the Cinémathèque de Tanger — North Africa's first art-house cinema — the institution holds a significant archive of Moroccan and North African films across two restored screening rooms, and remains an essential cultural hub in the city, with its café terrace opening onto the square.
