Dar el-Makhzen (enceinte royale de Meknès)

About this site

Former royal residence of Moulay Ismaïl in the 17th century, when Meknès was Morocco's capital, the Dar el-Makhzen is not open to visitors, but its monumental enclosure and vast ochre ramparts, visible from outside, give a sense of the sultan's architectural ambition. Walking around its walls, between Bab Mansour and the Heri es-Souani granaries, conveys the scale of the site.
