Salé's defensive ramparts, listed as a historic monument since 1914, encircle the medina and are punctuated by several gates and bastions, including Bab Mrisa. Originally built to protect the city from its maritime enemies in the era of the Salé Rovers — the famous local corsair brotherhood — these ochre walls remain one of the best-preserved fortified ensembles on Morocco's Atlantic coast.
