Grand Socco (Place du 9 Avril 1947)
The central square, between medina and new town

About this site
A former great souk turned central square, the Grand Socco marks the meeting point between the historic medina, the modern city center and the residential district of Marshan. It was here that Sultan Mohammed V delivered his 1947 speech heralding the beginnings of Moroccan independence, making this palm- and café-lined square a place steeped in national history.
