Built in the late 17th century under Sultan Moulay Ismail by the governor of Tangier, Ali ibn Abdallah Errifi (or possibly his son Ahmed), the Great Mosque of Asilah stands inside the old kasbah, at the eastern end of the medina. Its plainly decorated octagonal minaret belongs to an architectural form specific to the cities of northern Morocco — also found in Tangier, Tetouan and Chefchaouen — rare elsewhere in the country.
