About this site
Founded as early as the 7th century, the Great Mosque of Tangier underwent numerous transformations over the city's eventful history — converted into a Christian building by Portuguese colonists before being restored to Muslim worship, then enlarged in 1815 on the order of Sultan Moulay Slimane. Its architecture thus reflects the successive influences that have shaped Tangier, a crossroads between Europe and Africa.
