About this site

About ten kilometres west of Ouarzazate, Kasbah Tifoultoute stands on a rocky spur overlooking the Ouarzazate river valley. Built in the 17th-18th centuries, it belonged to the powerful Glaoui family — including Thami El Glaoui, nicknamed the 'Lord of the Atlas,' pasha of Marrakech, notoriously known for his collaboration with the French protectorate during the first half of the 20th century. Its strategic position allowed it to oversee the old trade routes crossing the region.

This rammed-earth fortress offers a more intimate, less touristy atmosphere than its famous neighbour Aït Ben Haddou. Part of the site has been developed to welcome visitors, with a terrace restaurant offering panoramic views over the palm groves and surrounding mountains — a viewpoint particularly sought after at sunset. The kasbah has also served as a filming location for several productions shot in the region.
