About this site

Given in 1821 by Sultan Moulay Slimane, this building today houses a museum tracing the history of Moroccan-American relations — Morocco having been the first country to recognize the independence of the United States in 1777. It is the oldest surviving American diplomatic building outside US territory, a status that makes it a unique heritage curiosity in Morocco.
