Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, the Essaouira medina is a remarkable example of an 18th-century fortified town blending European and North African influences. Designed by military engineers under Sultan Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah, it long served as a trading post open to the Atlantic. Its white and blue alleyways, ramparts and monumental gates (including Bab Doukkala) make it one of the best-preserved urban ensembles in Morocco.
