About this site

Clinging to a hillside and encircled by 5 km of walls pierced by seven gates, Tétouan's medina has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Nicknamed "the daughter of Granada" for its Hispano-Moorish architecture inherited from Andalusian Muslims fleeing the Reconquista after 1492, it preserves palaces, zellige fountains and whitewashed lanes, along with the memory of a large Sephardic Jewish community that once counted 16 synagogues here.
