About this site
The Mellah bears witness to the large Jewish community that drove Essaouira's commercial prosperity from the 18th to the 20th century, when the city's population was at times nearly half Jewish. Its narrow lanes and dark arcades, now partly in ruins, preserve the memory of this multi-faith past, alongside several synagogues still visible in the neighborhood.
