About this site
Also known as Souk Dakhli, the Petit Socco has held a central role in Tangier's medina since antiquity — it is thought to stand on the site of the ancient forum of Tingis. Before the creation of the international zone in 1923, several European consulates and the State Bank of Morocco stood here. Its cafés, including Café Tingis, hosted Beat Generation writers and artists throughout the 20th century — William Burroughs, Paul Bowles, Allen Ginsberg — drawn by the city's cosmopolitan atmosphere. Now renovated, the square remains an essential crossing point between the Petit and Grand Socco.
