About this site
Laid out from 1914 by the Spanish protectorate authorities under the name Plaza de España, this elliptical square lined with arcades, palm trees and Hispano-Moorish façades was renamed Place de la Libération after independence in 1956. It marks the transition between Larache's historic medina and the new town built by the Spanish, and remains bordered by landmark buildings such as the former Spanish Casino (now the Hotel España) and the Hotel Cervantes. The social heart of the city, it stays a key crossing point between the two quarters.
