Place de la Marche Verte

Like many squares and avenues across Morocco, Place de la Marche Verte takes its name from the 1975 Green March. It faces the best-preserved stretch of the ramparts that once encircled Béni Mellal's medina, fortified by Sultan Moulay Ismail in 1688 to secure the trade route between Fez-Meknes and Marrakech. While most of the wall — already noted as ruined by explorer Charles de Foucauld during his 1883 visit — has since disappeared, the western section, visible directly from the square, remains the most complete surviving trace of the original fortifications.
