Cité portugaise de Mazagan (El Jadida)

A 16th-century Portuguese fortress, UNESCO-listed since 2004

UNESCO

About this site

Built by the Portuguese from 1514 on the Atlantic coast, the city of Mazagan is an outstanding example of the interchange between European and Moroccan cultures, which earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004. Its ramparts, which can be walked along the rampart walk, are counted among the “Seven Wonders of Portuguese Origin in the World”. The fortified city was given up by Portugal in 1769 after the siege led by Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah, and renamed El Jadida in 1820. Its major Manueline monuments are the cistern and the Church of the Assumption.
