Université Al Quaraouiyine
The world's oldest university still in operation

About this site
Founded in 859 by Fatima al-Fihriya, a wealthy heiress originally from Kairouan (Tunisia), the University of Al Quaraouiyine is recognized by UNESCO and the Guinness World Records as the oldest continuously operating institution of higher education in the world — predating Oxford, Bologna, or the Sorbonne by several centuries. In the 12th century, it educated major thinkers such as Averroes, Ibn Khaldun, and the geographer Leo Africanus. Expanded by the Almoravid, Marinid, and later Saadian dynasties, it remains an active center of theological education at the heart of the Fès medina.
⚠️ The interior (mosque and teaching halls) is closed to non-Muslims. Only the historic library, restored and reopened to the public in 2016, can be visited — entrance via Place Seffarine. Visitors can glimpse the inner courtyard from the main door (Derb Boutouil), a classic stop on guided medina tours.
