About this site

Built between 1350 and 1355 on the orders of the Marinid sultan Abou Inan Faris (r. 1348-1359), the Bou Inania Medersa is considered the most sumptuous of Fès's medersas. It stands out for a unique status: the only medersa in the city with a minaret, it served both as a Quranic school and as the neighborhood's Friday mosque — which explains why it remains, along with the Seffarine Medersa, one of the few religious buildings in Fès open to non-Muslim visitors.

Built around a central courtyard adorned with zellige tilework, carved stucco, and finely worked cedar wood, it embodies the peak of Marinid art. Directly opposite its main entrance stands an enigmatic 14th-century hydraulic clock, whose complex mechanism has never been fully deciphered by researchers.

The medersa trained generations of students until the 1970s and remains one of the most popular visits in the medina today.
