Halfway between Marrakech, Fez and Casablanca, Beni Mellal sits at a crossroads at the foot of the Middle Atlas, overlooking the fertile Tadla agricultural plain — a less touristy stop than the great imperial cities, but an authentic and green one.
A kasbah to protect a coveted plain
In 1688, Alaouite Sultan Moulay Ismail had a kasbah built on the heights of the town, at the exact spot where the Ain Assardoun spring emerges. In the 17th and 18th centuries, this fortress played a strategic role: protecting the region from tribal raids that regularly threatened the rich agricultural lands of the Tadla, then as now one of Morocco's breadbaskets.
Ain Assardoun, a spring at the heart of the town
Now partly in ruins but still full of charm, the Ain Assardoun kasbah overlooks a spring whose waters, fed by the Middle Atlas, form waterfalls and pools that still irrigate the surrounding gardens and orchards — a welcome cool oasis in the summer heat. The site offers free entry for Moroccans and residents on Fridays and the first days of national and religious holidays.

Beni Mellal is a natural stopover on the road between Marrakech and Fez, or on the way to the valleys of the Middle Atlas. Spring, when the Tadla plain turns green, is the most pleasant time to visit.
