Médersa des Mérinides

Built between 1332 and 1333 on the orders of Marinid sultan Abu al-Hasan, this madrasa stands next to the Great Mosque of Salé, in the Souq el-Ghezal. Like the other Quranic schools founded by this prolific builder-sultan across the kingdom, it trained students from all over Morocco in religious sciences — Quran, hadith, law — as well as secular disciplines such as grammar and astronomy. Within just 180 m², the madrasa concentrates exceptional architectural refinement: polychrome zellige tilework, carved cedar wood and chiselled plaster adorn its courtyard and galleries. A masterpiece of Marinid art, it bears witness to Salé's intellectual influence in the 14th century, at the height of the dynasty.
