Best Time to Visit
Late afternoon (3:30pm–5pm) for the golden light on the rammed-earth walls. In winter, the snow-capped Atlas is often visible on the horizon from the terraces — an exceptional panorama.
Avoid: 12pm–2pm in summer (shadeless ruins, intense heat).
What Not to Miss
- The underground rooms: permanent exhibition featuring the minbar of the Koutoubia Mosque (11th century) in carved thuya wood — an absolute masterpiece of Islamic craftsmanship
- The central pools: filled in winter, they give a sense of the palace's original splendor
- The terraces: panoramic view of the Koutoubia, the medina's rooftops and the Atlas on a clear day
- The storks: nest atop the walls in season, symbols of Marrakech
Duration and Tips
Recommended duration: 45 minutes to 1 hour.
Go up to the terraces for the view (access is sometimes signposted separately — ask at the entrance). Bring a bottle of water, especially in summer.
Ideal Combination
El Badi + Saadian Tombs (5 min walk) = a half-day in the Kasbah. Start with El Badi in the morning (opening time), then move on to the Tombs before the groups arrive.
⚠️ Beware of Scams
Fake unofficial guides: Individuals position themselves at the entrance claiming to be licensed guides. Demand the official professional card issued by the Moroccan Ministry of Tourism.
Priority access off-platform: Never pay cash to someone offering a "skip-the-line ticket" or "special access" in front of the entrance. These are invariably scams.
Spontaneous guides toward the souks: After your visit, strangers will offer to lead you to shops. They earn a commission without telling you.
