What the official ticket office says about the caves
According to the Ministry of Culture, the Caves of Hercules are a listed site: natural limestone caverns, dark and damp, lit by a single opening onto the ocean with a magnificent view of the cape of the Strait of Gibraltar. They are Tangier's top tourist destination. According to Greek mythology, it was here that Hercules found rest; legend has it that this demigod dug the Strait of Gibraltar himself by parting the mountains, raising Jbel Tarik (Gibraltar) on one side and, on the African side, Jbel Moussa.
