Where to stay in Tangier? The best areas for your trip
Tangier looks towards Europe. Set at the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, the city stacks its white medina above the port, its 20th-century avenues around the Grand Socco and a long bay lined with hotels. To the west, the residential districts of the Marshan and the Mountain lead to Cape Spartel, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean.
Choosing where to stay in Tangier means choosing between the atmosphere of the old town, the convenience of the centre, the beach on the bay and the peace of the hills.
This guide helps you choose the right area before comparing places to stay.
Our advice: for a first visit, stay in the medina, the Kasbah or the city centre. The main sights are within walking distance of each other.
Which area should you choose in Tangier?
Ask yourself these five questions before looking at hotels:
- Is this your first visit? The medina, the Kasbah and the centre hold the monuments and museums.
- Are you travelling by car? The medina is hard to reach: a hotel in the centre, on the bay or in the west of the city is more practical.
- Are you looking for the beach? The bay and Malabata have large hotels with pools facing the sea.
- Are you arriving by train or for work? Hotels in the Tanger City Center district, at the eastern end of the bay, are the most convenient.
- Are you looking for peace and quiet? The Marshan, Boubana and the Cape Spartel area offer space and views of the strait.
The areas to stay in Tangier
🕌 The medina and the Kasbah: the historic heart
Ideal for: a first visit, history lovers, those who want to do everything on foot.

Known in antiquity as Tingis, Tangier was a Phoenician trading post before coming under Carthaginian and then Roman rule. Captured by the Portuguese in 1471, it later passed to the English, who returned it to Morocco in 1684. From 1923 to 1956, the city was an international zone run by several powers, a period that left it with a cosmopolitan atmosphere.
The medina runs down to the port in white lanes. At the top, the Kasbah overlooks the strait: the Kasbah Museum occupies the former sultan's palace. Lower down, the Petit Socco, the Great Mosque, the American Legation and Dar Niaba tell the story of the city's diplomatic past.
The Kasbah and the medina have many guest houses, often set in former mansions, with a terrace facing the sea.
Why choose the medina and the Kasbah?
- The monuments and museums within easy reach
- Guest houses with terraces over the strait
- The atmosphere of the lanes, cafés and souks
- The port and the beach just below
Good to know
The lanes are narrow, steep and often closed to cars. Your taxi will drop you at a gate or a square, and the rest of the way is on foot, sometimes up steps. Ask your guest house where to meet on arrival.
🏙️ The city centre: Grand Socco and Boulevard Pasteur
Ideal for: short stays, those who want sightseeing and comfort, travellers with a car.

The Grand Socco links the medina and the 20th-century city. Around it, Rue de la Liberté, Boulevard Pasteur and Boulevard Mohammed V bring together historic hotels and more modern addresses, cafés, bookshops and the Teatro Cervantes. The Cinémathèque de Tanger stands on the square.
Why choose the city centre?
- The medina close by, without the access problems
- Hotels with pools, parking and lifts
- Restaurants and cafés at all hours
- Views of the bay from the higher parts of the centre
Good to know
The centre is hilly: some hotels overlook the bay, others are on busy shopping streets. Check the view on offer and the exposure to noise.
🌊 The bay, the seafront and Malabata
Ideal for: the beach, families, stays with a pool, business trips.
Avenue Mohammed VI runs along the bay's long beach. Hotels here often have a pool and rooms facing the sea. To the east, the Tanger City Center district combines hotels and shops, and the Malabata road leads towards the point of the same name, home to Villa Harris, a former residence turned museum.
Why choose the bay?
- The beach and the seafront promenade
- Large hotels with pools, spas and gyms
- Easy access by car
- Rooms often facing the sea
Good to know
Plan on a taxi to reach the medina, especially from Tanger City Center and Malabata.
🌳 The Marshan and Dradeb
Ideal for: quiet stays, lovers of fine houses, travellers who enjoy walking.
West of the Kasbah, the Marshan is a residential district of villas and gardens on the plateau overlooking the strait. Further on, Dradeb spreads over the slopes. Here you will find a few guest houses with character, often with a pool and sea views.
Why choose the Marshan?
- Peace and quiet just beyond the Kasbah
- Views of the Strait of Gibraltar
- Guest houses with gardens and pools
Good to know
From the Marshan, the Kasbah can be reached on foot. From Dradeb, a taxi is more practical.
⛰️ West of Tangier: Boubana and Cape Spartel
Ideal for: relaxing stays, travellers with a car, nature and the ocean.

To the west, the green districts of Boubana and the Mountain are home to large estates and a few luxury hotels. Further on, the road skirts the forest to Cape Spartel, then to the Caves of Hercules and Achakar beach. On the way, the Perdicaris Palace can be visited in the heart of the Rmilat forest.
