Where to stay in Essaouira? The best areas for your trip

Essaouira is a town on a human scale. Its white and blue medina, enclosed by ramparts facing the Atlantic, is explored without a car. Around it, a long beach lines the bay, the village of Diabat spreads south between dunes and forest, and further on the wild coast of Sidi Kaouki draws surfers.

Choosing where to stay in Essaouira is mostly about choosing between the atmosphere of the old town, the beach and the open air of the surrounding countryside.

This guide helps you choose the right area before comparing places to stay.

Our advice: for a first visit, stay in the medina or just outside its gates. The port, the ramparts and the beach are all within walking distance of each other.

Which area should you choose in Essaouira?

Ask yourself these five questions before looking at hotels:

  • Is this your first visit? The medina holds the monuments, the port and the ramparts.
  • Are you coming for the beach or for water sports? The seafront and the surrounding area are more convenient.
  • Are you arriving by car? The medina is largely pedestrian: a hotel on the seafront or in the surrounding area is easier to reach.
  • Are you looking for peace and nature? Diabat and the countryside offer space, often with a pool.
  • Are you travelling with children? Hotels on the seafront and in the surrounding area more often have a pool and a garden.

The areas to stay in Essaouira

🕌 The medina and the Skala: the historic heart

Ideal for: a first visit, architecture lovers, those who want to do everything on foot.

Today's Essaouira was founded in the 18th century by Sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah. He called on architects, including the Frenchman Théodore Cornut, to build a fortified town following the principles of European military architecture. Long known as Mogador, its medina has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001.

Its layout, more regular than that of Morocco's other medinas, makes it easy to find your way. The ramparts of the Skala de la Ville, with their cannons pointing out to sea, line the old town on the ocean side; to the south, the Sqala du Port watches over the fishing harbour. In the medina you will also find the Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah Museum and, in the north-east, the Mellah, the former Jewish quarter, with the Haim Pinto Synagogue and the Bayt Al Dakira house of memory.

The Kasbah quarter, near the port, and the streets close to the Skala have many riads, some with a terrace overlooking the sea. Small guest houses stand alongside a few larger boutique hotels set in former mansions.

Why choose the medina?

  • The ramparts, the port and the monuments within easy reach
  • Riads and guest houses with roof terraces, sometimes facing the ocean
  • Restaurants, cafés and craft workshops on your doorstep
  • The beach just outside the old town

Good to know

The medina is largely closed to cars. Your taxi will drop you at a gate, such as Bab Marrakech or Bab Doukkala, or near the port, and the rest of the way is on foot. Ask your riad where to meet: many offer to come and collect you. The lanes are simpler than in Fès or Marrakech, but the doors look alike: make a careful note of the address.

🌊 The seafront and the bay

Ideal for: the beach, families, stays with a pool, travellers with a car.

South of the medina, a wide sandy beach stretches along the bay, partly sheltered by the island of Mogador. Boulevard Mohammed V, which runs alongside it, is home to most of the town's large hotels, with pools, gardens and sometimes direct access to the beach.

In antiquity, the islands off Essaouira housed purple-dye workshops: they are still called the Purple Isles. Today the bay is best known for its wind, which attracts windsurfers and kitesurfers.

Why choose the seafront?

  • The beach in front of the hotel
  • Hotels with pools, gardens and parking
  • The medina within reach along the bay
  • Rooms often facing the sea

Good to know

The wind often blows hard across the bay: depending on the day, the beach is better suited to walks and water sports than to sunbathing. A sheltered pool then makes all the difference.

⛳ Diabat and the Mogador golf course

Ideal for: golfers, quiet stays, travellers with a car.

South of the bay, beyond the Ksob river, the village of Diabat lies between dunes, forest and ocean. Nearby, the Mogador estate has a golf course and resort hotels with pools and plenty of space. The village also has a few guest houses.

Why choose Diabat?

  • Peace and quiet between dunes, forest and ocean
  • Hotels with pools, sometimes villas
  • Golf on site

Good to know

Plan on a taxi, a shuttle or a car to reach the medina. In return, you get space and silence.

🌿 The surrounding area: Sidi Kaouki and the hinterland

Ideal for: surfers, nature lovers, a relaxing stop.

Further south, the village of Sidi Kaouki opens onto a long wild beach popular with surfers. A few lodges and boutique hotels have settled here, often with a pool. In the hinterland, among the argan trees, other houses offer a stay in the countryside: the Essaouira region is one of the main centres of argan oil production.

Good to know

A car is almost essential. Check the access before booking: some properties are at the end of a dirt track.

Riad, guest house, hotel or lodge: which to choose?

The riad is the emblematic place to stay in the medina: a traditional house arranged around a patio, often whitewashed, with blue shutters and a roof terrace. In Essaouira, many terraces overlook the town's rooftops, sometimes the ocean.

Seafront hotels offer more services: reception, lifts, parking, a pool and often family rooms.

Lodges and country houses in the surrounding area are all about space: stone buildings, gardens, pools and views of nature. Read their descriptions carefully: services vary a lot from one place to another.

The climate

Thanks to the ocean, Essaouira stays mild all year round. Evenings can be cool, even in summer: bring a light sweater, and check the heating in winter.

Where to stay in Essaouira for your profile

For a first visit: the medina, in a riad, near the Skala or the Kasbah. You will be at the heart of the sights and the town's atmosphere.

As a couple: a riad with a roof terrace over the sea, or a quiet lodge near Sidi Kaouki.

As a family: a hotel with a pool on the seafront, or a resort in Diabat.

On a tight budget: the medina has many small guest houses and simple riads.

For a luxury stay: the large seafront hotels, the palaces of the medina or the golf resorts.

For water sports: the seafront for windsurfing and kitesurfing in the bay, Sidi Kaouki for surfing.

Before you book: the details that make a difference

  • Access on arrival. In the medina, ask where the taxi can drop you and whether someone will come to meet you.
  • Stairs. Riads often have several floors without a lift.
  • The wind. Terraces can be exposed: check whether the property has sheltered areas.
  • The Gnaoua festival. Held since 1998, usually in June, it fills the town: book early if you are coming at that time.
  • Rates. They vary greatly with the season and dates: compare when you book.
