Palais Perdicaris / Parc Rmilat

Overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar from the hills of the Rmilat district, this 70-hectare park takes its name from American businessman Ion Perdicaris, who built a villa here in the 1870s amid exotic plantings — yuccas, eucalyptus, California palms. The estate became world news in 1904 when Perdicaris was kidnapped by the Rif chieftain Raissouli, a diplomatic incident involving Morocco, the United States and Europe. Bought in 1930 by the powerful caïd Thami El Glaoui, who made it his Tangier residence, the domain became Moroccan state property after independence. Now a protected forest, it offers shaded walks and sweeping views of the Atlantic.
