What the official ticket office says about Volubilis
According to the Ministry of Culture, the capital of Mauretania, founded in the 3rd century BC, was an important outpost of the Roman Empire and was adorned with many fine monuments. Significant remains survive in the archaeological site. The city later became, for a brief period, the capital of Idris I, founder of the Idrisid dynasty, buried nearby at Moulay Idriss.
