The Agafay Desert: A Stone Desert at the Gates of Marrakech
Agafay is not a sand desert — it is a semi-arid plateau of stone and clay stretching southwest of Marrakech. Its proximity (30–40 min by road) makes it the ideal getaway for a memorable evening, without the exhaustion of a long trip to the Sahara.
Sunset with the Atlas Mountains as a Backdrop
The sunset at Agafay is one of the most beautiful in Morocco. With the sun dropping behind golden hills and the snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas forming a 180° panorama, the end-of-day light turns the plateau into a painting. The best camps organize pre-sunset drinks: mint tea on cushions, gnaoua music, an open view of the Atlas.
Experiences available at Agafay
Dinner under the stars
All camps offer dinners in a Berber tent or outdoors with a traditional Moroccan menu: mezze, tagine, couscous, mint tea, and oriental desserts. The candlelit atmosphere under a starry sky is incomparable.
Camel ride
Even without dunes, a camel ride at sunset is an authentic experience (30–45 min).
Quad biking on the plateau
For thrill-seekers, several camps offer quad bike rides before dinner.
Night in a luxury camp
The best tents have a private bathroom, terrace, and king-size bed. Waking up at dawn with the first rays on the Atlas is unforgettable.
