Dar Sanâa — École Nationale des Métiers et des Arts

Founded in 1919 under the Spanish protectorate by painter Mariano Bertucci and nationalist Abdessalam Bennouna, Dar Sanâa — literally "the house of craftsmanship" — is Morocco's oldest national school of arts and crafts. Standing opposite Bab el-Oqla, one of the medina's seven historic gates, it occupies a building in the Andalusian style typical of Tetouan, a city rebuilt in the 15th century by Muslim and Jewish refugees expelled from Spain. The school keeps alive skills at risk of disappearing — marquetry, inlaid leather, painted wood, weaving — passed down by master craftsmen to new generations of students, continuing the cultural blend that defines Tetouan.
