Médina de Tiznit

A medina founded in the late 19th century, ringed by a long wall

About this site

Tiznit, in the Souss, was founded by the Alawi sultan Hassan I in the late 19th century (1881 or 1882 depending on the source), and in 1883 was given a long wall that still encircles the old medina. Its name means “basket” in Berber. The medina is divided into four quarters centred on a spring, the “blue spring”, which irrigated many gardens. The town is known for its silversmithing, notably the silver fibula. It lies about 99 kilometres from Agadir by road, 16 km from Aglou beach and just south of Souss-Massa National Park.
