Sidi Ifni, ville Art déco de l'ancienne enclave espagnole

An Atlantic town of Art Deco facades, legacy of the Spanish enclave

About this site

Sidi Ifni, on the Atlantic coast, was a Spanish enclave: Morocco ceded Ifni to Spain under the Treaty of Tangiers in 1860, and the territory returned to Morocco in 1969. The town was developed from the 1930s in the modern style of the time, Art Deco, which its white and blue facades still show. The Military Treasury, inaugurated in 1938 and classified as a monument by Morocco's Ministry of Culture, is its most outstanding example, with a three-arched facade. The inhabitants, Shilha people of the Aït Baâmrane tribe, live mainly from fishing, around a port completed in 2000.
