Vallée des Ammeln et Tafraout

An Anti-Atlas valley among pink granite mountains

About this site

Tafraout is a small Berber-speaking town of the Anti-Atlas, 170 to 180 km south-east of Agadir, in the heart of the Ammeln valley, about a hundred kilometres south of Taroudant and east of Tiznit. It has about six thousand inhabitants, but its name extends to many villages of the valley. It lies at the foot of Djebel Lekest, a pink granite mountain shaped by erosion, surrounded by almond, olive, argan and fig trees. Tafraout was at various times the capital of the Souss; it began as a souk. Near the town, Jean Verame's painted rocks are one of its most visited sights.
