Kasbah d'Agadir Oufella

The hilltop fortress, memory of old Agadir

About this site

On a 236-metre hill north of Agadir, near the port, the Kasbah of Agadir Oufella housed the old city before the 1960 earthquake. In Berber, “Agadir” means “fort” and “Oufella” “above”: the fortress at the top. The Portuguese occupied the site in 1505; the Saadian sultan Muhammad al-Shaykh took the hill in 1540 and expelled the Portuguese in 1541. His successor Abdallah al-Ghalib built a new fortress there. Classified as a historical monument in 1932, destroyed by the earthquakes of 1755 and 1960, restored in 2002 and renovated again in 2020, it held, before 1960, a great mosque, a hospital, a Jewish quarter and several shrines.
