Mohammed V Airport Casablanca: How to Get to the City and What to Do During a Layover
You have just landed at Mohammed V Airport and one question comes almost immediately:
How do I get to Casablanca, and how much time do I really have to explore the city?
The answer depends on your situation.
Do you simply need to get to your hotel? The train, Aérobus, taxi or private transfer may all be suitable options.
Do you have a layover of several hours? The question becomes different: do you actually have enough time to leave the airport, enter Morocco, reach the city, visit somewhere and return in time for your next flight?
This is where many travelers underestimate the distances and travel times.
Mohammed V Airport is not located in the heart of Casablanca. It is several dozen kilometers from the city center, and a layover that looks long on paper can become much shorter once you factor in immigration, baggage, transportation and the time needed to return to the airport.
This guide helps you make a realistic choice.
You will find the main options for getting to Casablanca, their advantages and limitations, followed by a simple method for calculating how much time you actually have during a layover.
The essential advice: never calculate your sightseeing time based on the total length of your layover. Calculate it based on the time remaining after all transfers and formalities.
This guide does not provide a full-day itinerary, which has its own dedicated page: Casablanca in 1 Day.
Mohammed V Airport at a Glance
Before choosing your transport, it helps to understand where the airport is located.
| Airport | Mohammed V International Airport (code CMN), Casablanca's main airport |
| Distance from the city center | Around thirty kilometers by road (approximate) |
| Arrivals | Two exits to the public hall, at Terminals 1 and 2 (according to ONDA; confirm on site) |
| Terminals | Terminal 1 is associated with Royal Air Maroc and some partner airlines: check your flight's terminal |
| Main airline | Royal Air Maroc, which has its hub here |
| Connections to the city | Train, Aérobus, taxis, private transfers |
The list of airlines and destinations changes over time: check the airport or ONDA website for up-to-date information.
The ONDA page dedicated to arriving at Mohammed V Airport provides information about access and airport services.
You Have Just Landed: Which Transport Should You Choose?
There are four main options for getting to Casablanca.
None is perfect for everyone.
The best choice mainly depends on your budget, luggage, arrival time and where you are staying.
| Option | Best for | Approx. journey time | Indicative fare | Check before traveling |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Train | Travelers with light luggage, trips to Casa-Voyageurs or Casa-Port | Around 35–45 min | Around 50 MAD in 2nd class (unofficial sources) | Schedules and frequency on oncf.ma |
| Aérobus | Budget travelers, late arrivals, luggage | Varies depending on traffic | 50 MAD (announced fixed fare) | Frequency and schedules on ONDA's website |
| Official taxi | Groups, luggage, direct hotel transfer | Depending on traffic | Around 250–350 MAD (unofficial estimate) | Agree on the fare before getting in |
| Private transfer | Families, late arrivals, comfort | Similar to taxi | Price set at booking | Waiting and pickup conditions |
If you are traveling alone with little luggage, the train can be particularly attractive.
If you arrive with suitcases, children or several people, a taxi or private transfer may be much easier.
And if you arrive very late, carefully check the schedules and conditions of the transport option you choose.
The Train: Often the Easiest Way to Reach the City Center

A railway station is accessible from the arrivals hall.
It serves Casa-Voyageurs and Casa-Port, with no transfer required according to ONCF schedules.
According to an ONCF timetable, the journey takes around 35 minutes to Casa-Voyageurs and just under 50 minutes to Casa-Port.
On paper, this is a very attractive option.
You avoid some of the uncertainty associated with road traffic and arrive directly in two important areas of Casablanca.
Casa-Voyageurs or Casa-Port?
The best station depends on your destination.
Casa-Voyageurs is the city's main railway station. It is particularly useful if you are continuing your journey to Rabat or Marrakech.
Casa-Port, on the other hand, brings you closer to the Old Medina and the Hassan II Mosque area.
If your hotel is in the city center, simply check which station is more convenient for your final destination.
Watch the schedules
This is probably the most important point.
Train frequency and schedules can vary. Different sources may sometimes show different information, and some published schedules may not be dated.
Check ONCF on the day of your journey before relying on this option, particularly if you arrive late at night or very early in the morning.
The Aérobus: Another Way to Reach Casablanca

ONDA launched a shuttle service called Aérobus in December 2025.
According to an ONDA announcement, which we were unable to independently verify directly on its website, it connects Casa-Port railway station with Terminal 2, with a stop at Terminal 1.
The announced fixed fare is 50 MAD, with a frequency of 30 minutes, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The buses are air-conditioned and have luggage space.
The announcement is also reported by the Moroccan government portal maroc.ma.
Why might this option be useful?
It is one of the most affordable options for reaching Casa-Port.
And Casa-Port is particularly interesting for travelers who want to explore Casablanca quickly.
From this area, you are relatively close to:
- the Old Medina;
- the city center;
- several historic neighborhoods;
- the direction of the Hassan II Mosque.
However, an inexpensive fare does not mean an instant journey.
Traffic, waiting times and your final destination can significantly affect the total travel time.
Check the current frequency, stops and payment methods on the ONDA website before traveling.
This information may change, particularly at night.
Taxi: Convenient When You Want to Go Directly to Your Hotel
Official taxis are available outside the arrivals area.
For travelers with several bags or for a small group, this is often the most direct solution:
you leave the airport and travel directly to your destination.
You do not need to first reach a railway station.
The main point to watch is the price.
No official fare is published online clearly enough for the amounts commonly quoted to be considered a guaranteed tariff.
Travel guides often mention an approximate range of 250 to 350 MAD to the city center, but this is an unofficial estimate.
Agree on the fare, or confirm that the meter will be used, before getting into the taxi.
It is also useful to carry some cash.
When does a taxi make particular sense?
- You are traveling with several people;
- you have a lot of luggage;
- your hotel is far from the railway stations;
- you arrive at a time when the train is inconvenient;
- you want to avoid an additional connection.
For one person with a small bag, the train may be more economical.
For a family with several suitcases, however, the extra convenience can make a significant difference.
Private Transfer: More Expensive, but More Comfortable
A private transfer works differently from taking a taxi directly at the airport.
A driver can meet you when you arrive and take you directly to your accommodation.
The main advantage is simplicity.
You know in advance where you are going and the price is set when you make the booking.
This can be particularly convenient:
- for families;
- with several pieces of luggage;
- when arriving late;
- if you do not know Casablanca;
- if you want to avoid negotiating transportation after landing.
MoroccoMuseum offers a private chauffeur service, whose listing indicates flexible pickup and drop-off locations, including the airport, hotels or a custom location.
Before booking, check with the provider:
- the exact pickup procedure;
- where the driver will meet you;
- what happens if your flight is delayed;
- cancellation conditions;
- what is included in the fare.
Which Option Should You Choose?
If you want the quick answer:
💰 Traveling on a budget
Train or Aérobus.
These are the first options to consider.
🌙 Arriving late or very early
Aérobus, taxi or private transfer, depending on what is operating at the time of your arrival.
Always check train schedules.
👨👩👧 Traveling as a family
Taxi or private transfer.
With several suitcases and several travelers, convenience can easily outweigh the price difference.
🏨 Your hotel is near Casa-Port or the Medina
Aérobus or train may be convenient.
🏨 Your hotel is far from the railway stations
Taxi or private transfer will probably be easier.
Another possibility is to use public transport and then complete the journey by taxi.
What If You Are Not Simply Arriving in Casablanca?
This is where things become more interesting.
Perhaps you booked a flight with a long layover in Casablanca.
Your next flight leaves several hours later.
And you are wondering:
Do I really have enough time to visit Casablanca?
The answer is:
sometimes yes, but you need to calculate it properly.
Can You Leave the Airport During a Layover?
Yes, in some situations.
However, leaving the airport transit area means entering Morocco.
Entry requirements depend, among other things, on your nationality and individual circumstances, including your length of stay, purpose of travel, travel documents and other applicable conditions.
Consult only official information from the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (consulat.ma) or from the Moroccan embassy or consulate in your country.
You should also check with your airline regarding your connection.
Do not rely simply on an old list found on a travel blog.
Entry rules can change.
Before Leaving the Airport: Three Things to Check
A layover can look comfortable until one small detail changes the entire calculation.
Check in particular:
1. Your luggage
Is it checked through to your final destination?
Or do you need to collect it in Casablanca?
This difference can have a significant impact on the time available.
2. Your tickets
Are both flights on the same ticket?
If your tickets are separate, a delay may mean that your onward connection is not protected.
3. Your airline's rules
Some airlines have specific conditions for passengers with long layovers.
Check them before leaving the airport.
How to Calculate the Time You Actually Have During a Layover
This is probably the most important calculation in the entire guide.
Do not simply calculate:
layover duration = sightseeing time in Casablanca.
The real calculation looks more like this:
Sightseeing time = layover duration − time leaving the airport − outbound journey − return journey − time needed to get back into the airport − required check-in/security margin.
Let's take an example.
You have an 8-hour layover.
That does not mean you have 8 hours to explore Casablanca.
You need to subtract:
- the time needed to leave the airport;
- immigration and other formalities;
- baggage collection if necessary;
- the journey into Casablanca;
- the return journey;
- the time needed to be back at the airport before your next flight.
There may be far less time left than you initially imagined.
Leaving the airport can itself take time.
The round trip can represent several hours.
And you need to return early enough for your next flight.
Depending on your airline and situation, a margin of 2 to 3 hours before an international flight may be necessary.
Getting back to the airport must always take priority over sightseeing.
What Can You Do Depending on the Length of Your Layover?
These are editorial guidelines, not guarantees.
Your nationality, luggage, tickets, immigration procedures and traffic can completely change the situation.
| Layover length | What may be reasonable |
|---|---|
| A few hours | It is generally safer to remain at the airport. |
| Medium layover | Consider visiting one main site if the travel time and formalities allow it. |
| Half a day | A short itinerary may become possible: the mosque, Medina or city center. |
| Very long layover | A genuine visit to Casablanca may be possible, with a generous return buffer. |
| Overnight layover | Spending the night in Casablanca may be more worthwhile than rushing through a visit. |
The classic mistake is trying to see the Hassan II Mosque + the Medina + the city center + the Corniche during a layover.
That can work during a well-planned full day.
It is not necessarily a good idea during a flight connection.
Three Layover Formats That Work Better
Instead of trying to see everything, choose one main experience.
1. Hassan II Mosque + Corniche
If your arrival time matches a guided tour slot, this is probably one of the most interesting options.
The Hassan II Mosque is one of Casablanca's most iconic landmarks.
Interior visits take place through guided tours at scheduled times.
Check the available times for your date.
See our guide to visiting the Hassan II Mosque and the Hassan II Mosque listing.
After the visit, the Corniche gives you a chance to enjoy some fresh air before heading back.
Advantage: you discover one of Casablanca's most iconic landmarks.
Disadvantage: the visiting hours must fit your layover.
2. Medina + City Center
If you would rather experience the atmosphere of Casablanca, the Old Medina and city center make an interesting combination.
You can explore:
- the Old Medina;
- La Sqala, from the outside;
- Place Mohammed V;
- some of the streets of the city center.
For details, see our one-day itinerary.
This option is particularly interesting if you want to experience the city itself, rather than visiting a single monument.
3. An Evening in Casablanca
If your flight leaves late, you can consider an evening rather than a full day.
Dinner in the city center or along the Corniche can be a much more relaxed way to enjoy your layover.
The goal is not to turn a few free hours into a race against the clock.
Keep a generous buffer for your return.
For food ideas and addresses, see our guide to what to eat in Casablanca.
What If You Have Even More Time?
If your layover is long enough to consider several neighborhoods, you can extend your exploration.
Several of our guides can help you build an itinerary:
But keep one simple rule in mind:
during a layover, it is better to discover two places comfortably than four places while rushing.
What About Your Luggage During a Layover?
Exploring Casablanca with several suitcases is not particularly enjoyable.
Before leaving the airport, check whether there is a suitable luggage storage or left-luggage solution for your situation.
Check directly with ONDA or the relevant provider for:
- availability;
- opening hours;
- prices;
- conditions;
- luggage size or quantity limits.
Do not assume that luggage storage will necessarily be available when you arrive.
Can an Organized Tour Be Useful During a Layover?
Yes, in some situations.
A guided tour or private driver can save time because the itinerary is planned in advance.
This can be particularly useful when you only have a few hours and do not want to spend your time figuring out transportation and directions.
If you arrive by cruise ship or are staying at a hotel, see the Casablanca tour from cruise ships or hotels.
If you are leaving directly from the airport, check with the provider:
- the meeting point;
- pickup arrangements;
- the policy in case your flight is delayed;
- the waiting time included;
- the planned return time;
- cancellation conditions.
You can also compare the tours and experiences available in Casablanca.
Do not choose a tour simply because the itinerary looks interesting: during a layover, the reliability of the return is at least as important as the program itself.
Returning from Casablanca to Mohammed V Airport
The return journey deserves just as much attention as the outbound journey.
It is easy to think:
“I know the way now, I'll just take a taxi.”
But traffic conditions can change.
A delayed train can also reduce your safety margin.
To return to the airport, you can use:
- the Aérobus from Casa-Port;
- the train from Casa-Voyageurs or Casa-Port;
- a taxi;
- a private transfer booked in advance.
Check your flight terminal.
Also check your airline's check-in closing time.
And above all:
do not leave for the airport at the last minute.
One Simple Rule for a Stress-Free Layover
If you remember only one rule, make it this:
Plan your visit around the time you need to return to the airport, not around the time you arrive in Casablanca.
For example, if your flight leaves at 10 PM, don't think:
“I have the whole day until 10 PM.”
Think instead:
“What time do I need to be back at the airport?”
Then subtract:
- the journey to the airport;
- a safety margin;
- the time needed before check-in;
- the journey from your final sightseeing location.
The time left is your real sightseeing time.
This method may seem more cautious.
It is.
But it will also prevent a pleasant layover from turning into a race against your departure time.
After the Airport: Continuing Your Journey Through Morocco
Mohammed V Airport is not only a gateway to Casablanca.
It can also be the starting point for a wider journey.
Casa-Voyageurs railway station allows you to continue toward cities such as:
- Rabat;
- Tangier;
- Marrakech.
If Casablanca is only one stop on your journey, you can therefore continue easily to other Moroccan cities.

Practical Tips Before Leaving the Airport
A few small details can make a big difference.
1. Check your terminal
Do not simply note the airport name.
Check your flight's terminal, particularly for your departure.
2. Carry some cash
It can be useful for taxis, buses or trains.
3. Leave a safety margin
Traffic and airport formalities can take longer than expected.
4. Avoid unofficial solicitors
For transportation, use official taxis or a service booked in advance.
5. Keep your documents accessible
Your passport, tickets and connection information should remain easy to reach.
6. Do not overload your layover
You do not need to see all of Casablanca in a few hours.
Choose one main experience.
And enjoy it.
