Best time to visit

6pm–8pm (sunset) to watch the square transform from a daytime market into a nighttime spectacle. The golden light, the smell of grills lighting up, and the first circles of gnaoua musicians create a unique atmosphere.

Go up to a café terrace (Café de France, Grand Balcon du Café Glacier) between 6 and 7pm to see the square from above before heading down into it.

What not to miss

  • Freshly squeezed orange juice: numbered stands in the center of the square (around 5 MAD) — the best in Marrakech
  • The gnaoua circles: musicians with guembri and krakeb — look for the busiest circles, a sign of quality
  • The storytellers' halqas: in Darija, hard to follow without the language, but the art of performance transcends language barriers
  • Night street food stalls: harira (soup), méchoui, skewers, snails — a must-try experience

1 to 3 hours depending on your mood — the square is best experienced over time.

Safety tips

  • Don't flash wads of cash: pickpockets are active in the evening
  • "Free photos" with snakes or monkeys are actually paid — clarify before approaching
  • Henna artists charge high undisclosed prices — ask the price before extending your hand

⚠️ Watch out for scams

Fake unofficial guides: Individuals position themselves at the entrance claiming to be licensed guides. Demand the official professional card issued by the Moroccan Ministry of Tourism.

Off-platform priority access: Never pay cash to someone offering a "skip-the-line ticket" or "special access" in front of the entrance. These are systematically scams.

Spontaneous guides to the souks: After the visit, strangers will offer to lead you to shops. They receive a commission without telling you.

Best practice: Book online on a certified platform for the official price and legitimate skip-the-line access.
