Where to stay in Rabat? The best areas for your trip

Choosing where to stay in Rabat is not just a matter of finding a good hotel in a capital city.

Rabat is a very varied city: you can wake up in a lane of the medina, near the Kasbah of the Udayas, in the heart of the monuments district, in a modern leafy neighbourhood, facing the Atlantic or close to a station that connects you to Casablanca.

So there is no real "best area to stay in Rabat".

There is mostly the area that best fits your trip.

Are you coming for a cultural weekend and want to see the monuments without making endless journeys? Are you looking for the charm of a riad in the medina? Would you rather have a quiet area and comfortable hotels? Are you travelling for work? Are you arriving by train and want to keep getting around simple?

This guide helps you choose the right area before you even start comparing places to stay.

Our advice: choose your area first, then your accommodation.

Which area should you choose in Rabat?

Before looking at prices and hotels, ask yourself five simple questions:

  • How long are you staying? For one or two nights, limiting your journeys makes a real difference.
  • What do you want to discover? The medina and Kasbah, the Hassan Tower, museums, gardens, the ocean, local food?
  • How will you get around? On foot, by taxi or by tram?
  • What does your ideal evening look like? A quiet dinner, a lively café, a walk facing the ocean or the calm of a residential area?
  • Are you arriving or leaving by train or by plane? If so, the station or the airport may weigh in your choice.

These questions already rule out several areas and let you focus on the ones that fit your stay.

The best areas to stay in Rabat

🏰 Medina and Kasbah of the Udayas: sleeping in the historic city

Ideal for: the charm of a riad, the atmosphere of the old town, walks through the lanes and discovering the heritage.

The medina is the historic heart of Rabat. It was built in the 17th century to welcome refugees from Andalusia; today it is known for its former mellah, its covered souk Es-Sebat, on the Rue des Consuls, and its varied shops. Close by, the Kasbah of the Udayas, a former fortress facing the ocean, became a residential neighbourhood in the 19th century.

Staying here means choosing a more intimate, slower Rabat that is closer to its history. In the evening the lanes quiet down; in the morning you are already in the middle of the sights. If the subject interests you, prepare your stay with our page on the medina of Rabat, the one on the Kasbah of the Udayas and the Kasbah visitor guide.

Accommodation here is often a riad or a small guesthouse. The charm is real, but the exact location matters: check access by car or taxi, especially with luggage.

Why choose the medina and the Kasbah?

  • Old-town atmosphere and charming riads
  • Close to the Kasbah of the Udayas and its gardens
  • Kasbah and medina side by side, to discover on the same day
  • Shops, crafts and a covered souk
  • A more local experience than in a large hotel

Good to know

The lanes are narrow and parking is limited: it is not the best choice if you arrive heavily loaded or if you want large shared spaces. On the other hand, it is probably the most evocative area for a first heritage visit.

🕌 Hassan: monuments, the Hassan Tower and the mausoleum

Ideal for: a heritage-focused visit, the Hassan Tower, the Mohammed V mausoleum and the life of the historic centre of the modern city.

The Hassan district groups the oldest neighbourhoods of Rabat. The Hassan neighbourhood itself is the city's first European quarter, built inside the Almohad wall and left empty until the French protectorate. It is still very lively today, especially around Avenue Mohammed V.

This is the area to look at if your priority is the Hassan Tower and the Mohammed V mausoleum, one of the most emblematic sites of the capital. Our guide to the Hassan Tower and the mausoleum helps you prepare your visit.

The historic ensemble of Rabat has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since June 2012: the new town, the Kasbah of the Udayas, the medina, the Almohad ramparts, the site of Chellah, the Hassan mosque (of which the Hassan Tower is the minaret) and the Mohammed V mausoleum are part of it.

Why choose Hassan?

  • A central position for sightseeing
  • Several properties in an area that is easy to locate
  • Close to Avenue Mohammed V, its cafés and its shops
  • A good starting point for a two-day cultural stay

Good to know

Administrative offices, shops and monuments sit side by side in this area: check the atmosphere around the address you choose, especially in the evening. Depending on the property, the view and surroundings vary a lot.

🚆 City centre and station: the practical choice

Ideal for: travellers arriving or leaving by train, short stays and anyone who wants to limit journeys.

Rabat-Ville station is near the heart of the city, in the Hassan district. Opened in 1923, it is one of the oldest stations in Morocco and combines a fairly restrained Art Deco architecture with details inspired by local architecture. It is served by line L1 of the Rabat-Salé tramway.

Rabat has two stations: Rabat-Ville, in the Hassan district, and Rabat-Agdal, on the edge of the hypercentre. A fast shuttle train links Casablanca, Rabat and Kenitra; according to the information available, it runs the Casablanca–Rabat route in about an hour. Always check the timetable and conditions with ONCF.

Why choose the centre and the station?

  • Easy access by train, especially from Casablanca
  • The tram nearby to reach other areas
  • Shops, cafés and services around Avenue Mohammed V
  • Practical for a stopover or a short stay

Good to know

This area is above all functional. If you are looking for the charm of a riad or the calm of a residential area, look at the medina or Souissi instead.

🛍️ Agdal: a modern area, shops and the tram

Ideal for: a comfortable stay, shopping, restaurants, and travellers who like a lively, practical neighbourhood.

Agdal is a former European quarter that has become an important business and activity centre of the city. You will find many shops, including the large Arribat Center mall, as well as university and hospital facilities, and many agencies and administrations.

The area is served by Rabat-Agdal station and by tram line L1, which links Rabat-Ville station, the faculties and Agdal. Ibn Sina Park, often called "Hilton Park" by locals, offers a green space with its pines and eucalyptus trees.

Why choose Agdal?

  • A modern area, practical for everyday life
  • Many shops and restaurants
  • Tram and station nearby
  • Green spaces, including Ibn Sina Park
  • Several hotels in different categories

Good to know

Agdal is not the most evocative area for a first heritage visit: to see the monuments, you will need the tram or a taxi. In return, you get a calmer environment and services close at hand.

🌊 Océan and the seafront: the Atlantic at the foot of the city

Ideal for: travellers who want to combine sightseeing and the ocean, a distinctive address, walks facing the sea.

On the Atlantic side, the Océan neighbourhood is a former extension of the Saniya Gharbiya district. It long housed well-off Rabat families, as well as Moroccan, French, Spanish and Portuguese communities, and for a very long time it was a hub of the city's cultural life.

The former Kasr Al Bahr site, now occupied by a hotel, is in this area. The name of the neighbouring Qbibat district comes from "Kasr Qbibat", another name for this palace. Tram line L2 serves the Océan neighbourhood.

Why choose the Océan?

  • An atmosphere turned towards the Atlantic
  • The history and heritage of the neighbourhood
  • An interesting choice for a high-end address facing the sea
  • Tram line L2 to reach the rest of the city

Good to know

To visit the medina or the monuments, plan on a taxi or the tram: check the real route from the address you choose.

🌳 Souissi: calm and residential

Ideal for: a restful stay, a comfortable hotel in a leafy setting, travellers who do not need to be in the very centre.

Souissi is one of the five districts of the commune of Rabat. Several travel guides describe it as a quiet residential area with upmarket hotels. Tram line L1 serves the Souissi hospital area, which makes journeys to the centre easier.

If you like coming back in the evening to a calm place after a day of sightseeing, it is a serious option.

Why choose Souissi?

  • A calm, residential atmosphere
  • Comfortable hotels, including high-end addresses
  • A more spacious setting than the centre
  • The tram to reach the centre

Good to know

Souissi is not a monuments district: to reach the medina or the Hassan Tower, you will need to travel. If you want to eat near your hotel or go out in the evening, check what is actually around your hotel.

💼 Hay Riad and western Rabat: the modern business district

Ideal for: business trips, a modern and well-organised area, a stay away from the historic centre.

STORY Le Carrousel Rabat — Photo: STORY Le Carrousel Rabat

Hay Riad is Rabat's new business and administrative centre, notably around Avenue Annakhil and the Mahaj Riad. It is a recent neighbourhood, much less rooted in history than the medina or Hassan.

The appeal is mainly practical: closeness to offices and shops, modern buildings, an organised environment.

Why choose Hay Riad?

  • Close to offices
  • A modern, well-organised area
  • Suited to a business trip
  • Away from the bustle of the historic centre

Good to know

For a mainly tourist trip, the medina, Hassan or Agdal will generally be more interesting: you will spend less time in transport.

Which area for your trip?

There is no absolute ranking.

The best area depends on what you want to do once your hotel door has closed behind you.

How much does accommodation cost in Rabat?

It is one of the hardest questions to sum up in a single figure.

Prices can change a lot depending on:

  • the season;
  • the dates (some events, such as the Mawazine festival, which usually takes place in late May or early June, can push demand up);
  • availability;
  • the category of the property;
  • the area;
  • the cancellation conditions;
  • whether breakfast is included.

The ranges published online do not always agree: we prefer not to display a general rate that would quickly become misleading.

Instead, think in categories:

CategoryWhat to expect
BudgetHostels, simple hotels, reduced services
Mid-rangeHotels with standard comfort, often well located
UpperHigher-end hotels with more services
LuxuryHigh-end properties and fuller services

To know the real price of a night, always compare offers for your exact dates.

Hotel, riad or apartment: which to choose?

The area is only the first decision.

You then need to choose the type of accommodation that fits the way you travel.

Hotel

The simplest choice if you want a reception desk, services, possibly breakfast and, depending on the property, a pool or wellness area. Check reception hours if you arrive late.

Riad or guesthouse

This type of accommodation offers a more local atmosphere, especially in the medina and the Kasbah. In return, the exact location is particularly important: check taxi access, any stairs and the real distance to the places you want to see.

Aparthotel

Interesting for longer stays, or if you want space and the possibility of cooking. On the other hand, you will not always have a traditional reception desk.

At the end of the page you will find a short selection of places to stay in Rabat. It is a practical starting point, with links to check availability for your dates; booking is then made on the booking site indicated. This page remains above all a guide to choosing an area and the right criteria before booking. You can also browse all our accommodation in Rabat, organised by area.

Where to stay in Rabat by traveller profile

👤 You are coming for the first time

Choose first: Hassan or the medina

You will be well placed to discover several sights without spending your days in transport. Our complete guide to Rabat will help you organise your visits.

🏰 You are looking for charm and authenticity

Choose: medina and Kasbah of the Udayas

A riad or guesthouse gives you a more local experience than a large hotel, with the monuments within walking distance.

🚆 You are arriving by train

Look at: city centre and station, or Agdal

Rabat-Ville and Rabat-Agdal are two useful stations depending on your hotel. The tram then completes your journeys.

🛍️ You want comfort and shops

Look at: Agdal

A modern, well-equipped area that is practical for daily life.

🌊 You want the ocean

Look at: Océan

You gain an atmosphere turned towards the Atlantic, with a journey to plan to the medina.

🌳 You want calm

Look at: Souissi

A more peaceful setting, with transport to plan to reach the monuments.

💼 You are travelling for work

Look at: Hay Riad, or the city centre depending on where your meetings are

Being close to offices is probably more important than being close to monuments.

Where to stay near the station or the airport?

Rabat has two stations: Rabat-Ville, in the Hassan district, and Rabat-Agdal. If you are arriving by train, choosing a hotel close to one of these stations makes arrival much simpler, especially with luggage.

Rabat-Salé airport is shared between the two cities. Many travellers also arrive via Casablanca and then reach Rabat by train: our guide to Mohammed V airport, transfers and layovers details the options. Check flight and train times before booking, especially for a very early departure.

Where to stay to visit Rabat in 1 or 2 days?

For a short first visit, we would favour simplicity: Hassan, the city centre or the medina.

You could, for example, spend a morning at the Hassan Tower and the Mohammed V mausoleum, have lunch in the centre, spend the afternoon in the medina and the Kasbah of the Udayas, then return to your accommodation. A second day lets you add the Chellah site, the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art or the Museum of History and Civilisations.

If you prefer to be guided, you can also look at the private cultural walking tour of Rabat with a licensed guide, the Rabat food tour or the electric tuk-tuk tour. Always check the conditions and times on the activity page.

Before you book your hotel: the details that can change your stay

A good location is not enough.

Before confirming your booking, check:

  • the exact location on a map;
  • the real route to the places you want to visit: a short distance on a map does not always mean an easy journey;
  • access by taxi or car, especially in the medina;
  • the cancellation conditions;
  • breakfast, the pool or the spa if they matter to you: check whether they are included or paid;
  • the season: in winter the climate is cool and rainy, with pleasant days around 17 °C; in summer temperatures rarely exceed 30 °C and the nights stay cool;
  • arrival and departure times if you are travelling by train.

And if you stay longer?

If your stay lasts more than two days, Rabat is very enjoyable at a slower pace: museums, gardens, the medina, the beaches along the coast and the Bouregreg marina.

The twin city of Salé, on the other side of the river, is also worth the trip: see our Salé destination page and our guide to discovering Salé. To compare with another large city, read our guide Where to stay in Casablanca. Finally, all the ideas for visits are gathered on the Rabat destination page.
