Morocco's National Foundation of Museums (FNM) now runs a network of 22 museums across the country, from archaeology to Earth sciences, from modern art to photography. Many have opened or been renovated in recent years. This guide presents them city by city and helps you plan your visits.

Rabat: four museums, from adornment to photography

Rabat holds a large part of the network. The Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art is the capital's museum of modern and contemporary art, and the Museum of History and Civilizations traces the country's past through its collections.

In the Kasbah of the Udayas, a UNESCO site together with Rabat's medina, the National Museum of Adornment opened on 9 January 2023: its permanent exhibition is devoted to adornment, in five sections, and includes Amazigh jewellery. On the corniche, the National Museum of Photography occupies Fort Rottembourg, turned into a museum in 2020, and champions Morocco's young photography scene.

Casablanca: Tadao Ando and the memory of the city

The Museum of Photography and Visual Arts, in the old medina, is the only work by the Japanese architect Tadao Ando on the African continent: a raw-concrete extension grafted onto the historic arcades and walls. The Villa Carl Ficke, Casablanca Museum of Memory, an early 20th-century Neo-Moorish villa, hosts contemporary art exhibitions and sculptures in its garden.

Tangier: diplomacy, travelling artists and 20th-century art

In the medina, Dar Niaba, Museum of Travelling Artists traces Tangier's diplomatic history and presents a collection of about 350 works by travelling artists, including Eugène Delacroix. Facing the Mediterranean, the Villa Harris, Tangier Museum displays two centuries of art history in Morocco. Complete your visit with the Kasbah of Tangier and its museum.

Marrakech, Fez, Tetouan: three major heritage museums

In Marrakech, the Museum of Confluences at Dar El Bacha and the Museum of Intangible Heritage belong to the FNM network, as does Dar Si Saïd, devoted to weaving and carpets. In Fez, the Al Batha Museum is devoted to the arts of Islam. In Tetouan, the Archaeological Museum, opened in 1940, gathers Roman mosaics from Lixus and pieces from Tamuda and Ksar Es Sghir.

Agadir, Safi, Salé, Azilal: recent museums

The network has grown towards the south and the regions. In Agadir, Agadir Musée d'Art, opened in 2023, combines modern painting, jewellery and carpets, and the Agadir Reconstruction Museum, opened in February 2025, recounts the 1960 earthquake and the city's rebirth. In Safi, a city with a pottery tradition, the National Ceramics Museum presents Moroccan ceramics. In Salé, the Moroccan Football Museum, opened in March 2024, tells the story of the national game. In the High Atlas, the Azilal Museum, opened in June 2023, is devoted to Earth sciences and displays the skeleton of Atlasaurus imelakei.
